My big break

by aaron on May 11, 2011

It looks like my biking season is pretty much over. Yesterday while riding I wiped out on my bike while making a left turn. It seems that my front tire lost all of the air that was in it and gave out while I was making the turn and that resulted in my crashing in the middle of Foster Avenue (literally – I was on the double yellow lines). At first I thought it was just a bad sprain but the pain continued and was worse than I’ve ever felt before. Since I had to be home to take care of the kid I decided not to go to the ER right away. Later, I was taken to the ER (at Methodist Hospital) and after two rounds of x-rays it was declared that I had a broken fibula.

It’s a weird feeling breaking your first bone at 40. Getting around is not easy, even with crutches since I’m not used to them and they are more uncomfortable then they look. Also, getting to the office is going to be a challenge via the subway since there are a lot of stairs that I have to get up and down. Another problem is that I have a trips to Philadelphia, Greenville, SC and then Pittsburgh in the next 5 weeks. I have a feeling those trips are going to pose some challenges that I can’t even foresee yet.

It’s almost biking season

by aaron on March 9, 2010

With daylight savings time almost upon us I have started thinking about once again biking to work. My bike shouldn’t need much work since it’s been indoors the entire winter (much to Rivky’s chagrin). I think that all my bike needs is the tires filled with air. I just bought myself some riding gloves to go along with my new tool kit and seat bag.

I suppose that I should start small and do some warm up rides.

A good start

January 26, 2010

In the latest installment of the Williamsburg saga of Hasids vs. Hipsers it seems that the two sides are talking to each other. This is a very good start to things. I’m not surprised that the debate was a mostly pro bike lane crowd but it seems that the Satmar representative and City Council Candidate [...]

Bike Lane Quick Hits

December 20, 2009

There have been some updates since the my last post about the “hipsters vs hasidim” smackdown in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn. I’ll just break them into bullet points. There is a “freedom ride” protest scheduled for today. This was supposed to be people riding in the buff. It was cancelled due to the weather [...]

A Pox on both their houses

December 15, 2009

I’m probably going to catch some flack for this post but what the heck. In the local news there has been a lot of buzz about a battle that has been brewing between Hasidim living in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn and the Hipsters who also live there. The focus of the battle is 15 [...]

Bicycle Shopping list

September 6, 2009

It looks like biking season is winding down here in the Northeast (I would say it’s going to end October 31st). I’ve had a good time biking this year and I look forward to doing more next year when I have the “full” season (starting in late March). I have begun to take stock in [...]

View from inside a head

July 5, 2009

This is pretty cool news, the head of the Statue of Liberty is now open again for visitors to climb up hundreds of stairs and view out of her crown. (8:05am UPDATE: Not only is the head open but the ARM is open too which is the real news here. IIRC the head was always [...]

Going the distance

July 2, 2009

I did another 12 mile ride yesterday, it’s the 4th ride that I did this week and I have averaged 13 miles per ride while I have been on vacation (I am thinking about taking a day off today but like my “day off” yesterday it is subject to change). Yesterday I started thinking that [...]

I so want to get this

June 29, 2009

You may have heard that I started biking this month and have really gotten into the whole riding thing. In fact I did an hour ride today while I’m on staycation. Anyway, I have always kicked around the idea about biking jersey to wear when I ride as opposed to the various t-shirts that I [...]

Random thoughts

June 16, 2009

I have not posted anything of substance up here recently because I’ve been pretty busy. It’s not that I have not wanted to but it always seems to be low on my priority list. Sad, but true. Here are some random things that have been on my mind as of late. This weather has really [...]
